A real place says Patrick O'Brian, author of The Thirteen Gun Salute-See Chapter 8 for a discription of the Budhist Temple at the top of a climb up a thousand steps by a lake that was formed by a volcano crator. Pulo Prabang is one of the Maylay states in the South China Sea. It was written about in a book called Manon Lescaut. I cannot find it on map. There may be a modern name for the place.
