Do surfers see ocean mirages?

My friend Mary goes surfing on weekends. She became interested in surfing because she works with a bunch of guys who surf, and who talk about surfing at work all the time. She says there aren't very many women surfers - it takes a lot of upper-body strength to paddle out to the waves. I asked Mary if she had ever seen any mirages when she is sitting out in the water on her surfboard, waiting for the perfect wave. Mary reports: "I can't say I have seen any mirages but sometimes when you are sitting on your board, looking out toward the water, the horizon gets "wavy", like heat interference you would see in a hot parking lot. I spend more time looking for sharks."
