This is the the Greek letter delta.
It's called a delta because of its shape.  The alluvial deposit at the mouth of the Okavango River (as well as the Nile and Ganges rivers) looks somewhat like the Greek letter "delta."

Did you know that Namibia once looked into diverting the water from the Chubango/Okavango River (which feeds the Okavango Delta) into the drier interior of Namibia towards its capital city, Windhoek?

The Chubango/Okavango River forms part of the border between Namibia and Angola.

When Rivers Run Into the Ocean is a page about deltas by The Evergreen Project with interesting satellite photos of the Amazon, Mississippi and Nile deltas.
