There is no comparison! Iguazu Falls are the best! I have visited there six times and have loved every one!

I just returned from Iguacu Falls. Comparing it with Niagara is like comparing an Indy car with a VW Beetle. There is absolutely nothing in the world more spectacular than Iguacu Falls.

I am originally from South Africa, but we emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1997. Since 1993, we have visited Argentina several times, and we have also visited the Niagara falls since being in Canada.

We saw the Iguazu Falls in January, 1994. Because there are not many waterfalls in South Africa, we were most impressed! The thousands of butterflies were fascinating, the screeching of the huge sun beetles or heat beetles sounded strange and exotic, and the lush forests and mild water we swam in near the Isla San Martin are experiences not to be forgotten. Yes, it was hot. Yes, it was very humid. Yes, we were sticky with heat! But we also had fun.

In the river we were bragging that we are swimming in three countries at the same time - what a feat! The men, however, were complaining that something was biting them. After a while we discoverd hundreds of tiny little fish, nibbling on them. Hopefully they were not piranahs ....

We also went to Brasil were we loved the food, and then into Paraguay, to attend the street market. Very interesting, very different.

Niagara, on the other hand, is totally commercialised. We were disappointed at first, because at Iguazu every turn in the path brought a different view, a different perspective and a different sound. Niagara is organised, clean, efficient and has loads of souviniers! (My big stuffed parrot bought at Iguazu still hangs from the ceiling and the two lovely framed posters have pride of place in our home.)

But Niagara has its own magic. And water is always magnificent, no matter where you see the display of its power. I guess growing up in the centre of South Africa, where it is normally very dry, also has a certain influence. (See my pages about moving from South Africa to Canada.)

Once again - thanks for your site!
